My approach

I really enjoy helping people make positive and lasting changes – with practical, contemporary, evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy that quickly works.

I offer a motivating, individually tailored and skills-focussed approach to therapy, coaching and supervision.

The way I work is grounded in leading-edge cognitive, contextual and behavioural sciences, and 20 years’ dedication to ongoing training and research. I help people overcome struggles and live with greater vitality, freedom, heartfulness and wisdom. I like helping people really DO what matters – not just talk about it!

I like to work as a creative and collaborative team with each of my clients. Listening to feedback, I’m delighted that people find working with me to be inspiring, down to earth, and – to their surprise – actually very enjoyable!

I’m passionate about assisting people to gain the insights, tools and confidence, to keep moving from strength to strength, long after therapy or mentoring with me has finished.

My commitment is to genuinely ‘practice what I teach’ alongside you, and to be transparent in the way that I share valuable strategies, so you can use them yourself – and pass them on to others for their benefit too.

Teamwork to really support you

My aim is for you to leave sessions feeling supported and inspired to go and do what matters to you, even when it’s tough. I find it very rewarding to share immensely useful skills with people, support them in their life journey, and help them thrive.

Bringing warmth, understanding, genuineness and respect – in a wholehearted way – is core to the way I work. It’s a privilege to assist people go beyond “coping”, and, even in very difficult life circumstances, find renewed energy, equilibrium and perspective. I enjoy helping my clients get the most out of sessions, and develop the ability to be an astute mentor to themselves.

Tuning in to your needs

The way I work is to design a personalised approach that matches your specific aims, and to be responsive to each positive change, as your growth unfolds. We will work with a process that’s clearly defined by your priorities from start to finish.

I find it comes naturally to me to flow between the qualities of compassion and pragmatism, seriousness and humour, gentleness and challenge – and to turn up the dial on any of these, according to what suits you best.

You’ll find me to be very attentive your preferences, and very practical – I believe in doing what actually works in real life! Sometimes of course, you may need help in doing less of some things, and learning how to just sit and simply BE, to observe more astutely, to enjoy the moment more, or to work with your body in a more sustainable way.

Therapy and coaching combined

Over the past 18 years, I’ve discovered that an especially effective approach in helping people move forward is often a combination of ‘therapy’ and ‘coaching’.

By drawing on both therapy and coaching, I can match a broader scope of strategies to different areas of your life. Together, we can decide if we will work with more of a therapy or coaching style, depending on your aims and preferences, at different stages in your journey of growth.

Some people start with therapy and move towards coaching as they progress, others start with combined approach, right from the start. Either way, the focus is about empowering you to do the things that really matter to you, and find deeper freedom and fulfillment.

Drawing on science

My interest in contextual behavioural science and interpersonal neurobiology means I can also help you understand what helps and hinders your brain (not just your mind) – and how you can help yourself to make swifter more lasting progress in any area of your life through good brain functioning.

I can teach you how to ensure optimal whole system functionality – not just psychologically, but physically too. Learning how to balance your endocrine (hormone) system, regulate your heart, and relax your muscles swiftly and deliberately are very important aspects of managing stress, anxiety and tension levels.

I can teach you how to quickly centre yourself, and stay grounded, in potentially triggering interpersonal situations, such as handling disagreement, self disclosure, speaking in public, interviewing and negotiation.

I will always help you apply CBT tools in a way that’s realistic about the demands you face, and tuned in to the different contexts of your life.

I can also teach you how to be an effective coach towards yourself – to make swifter, more lasting progress in any area of your life – long after our teamwork has finished. I like making learning easy and enjoyable too!

A cost-effective investment

CBT is an umbrella term for several approaches that are based on rigorous international research, with the specific quest of creating precise, science based therapy that maximises outcomes for clients, in all key psychological, interpersonal and occupational aspects of wellbeing.

The questions, ‘what works best for whom, why is that exactly, and how can therapy be delivered in the most effective and efficient way for rapid, long term change’ have guided cognitive and behavioural science for 60 years.

What I’m passionate about is creating the opportunity for my clients to invest in developing their psychological flexibility, knowledge, skills, resilience and confidence, so that they can become good, strategic mentors to themselves and the people who’s lives they impact.

My personal interests

I have a geeky interest in research and I’m a ‘training junkie’ ! I very much enjoy art, drama and movement, and it’s exciting to me to weave both the art and science of growth and change together, in my own life, to practice what I teach.

I love the work I do – it’s my vocation and my hobby! I’ve greatly enjoyed the intensity of combining travel with voluntary work in many parts of the world and I get a big buzz out of making a difference in highly challenging situations. I hope I can pass this ‘buzz’ on to you through the work we do together.

Training, qualifications and experience

  • BSc (hons) in Occupational Therapy (1998)
  • Advanced certificate in CBT (2002)
  • Post Graduate Diploma (MA level) in CBT (2005 – full accreditation date)
  • Diploma in Belief Therapy for Addictions (2007)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching Adults in the Life Long Learning Sector (2009)

I am formally qualified as a trainer, and I have trained students and therapists in Occupational Therapy and contemporary approaches to CBT at Advanced Diploma level, since 2007, so I can truly help you learn new skills.

It’s very important that teamwork has the scope for you to truly get unstuck from whatever’s been holding you back – whether that’s your personal history, external circumstances, less helpful beliefs, habits and coping styles. I will be drawing on all aspects of my training that are most likely to help you get there.

As a firm believer in continuous professional and personal development, I have been training in a wide variety of cognitive behavioural therapy and coaching approaches since 1996, including:

  • 20 years of CPD and training in mental health, wellbeing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • 15 years of mindfulness training and practice
  • 9 years of training and coaching in acceptance and commitment therapy
  • 9 years of training and study in compassion-focussed therapy

My clients find that combining these approaches is especially helpful in getting unstuck from difficult thoughts, feelings and habits, and move towards better awareness, communication and fulfilment in both work and relationships.

I have:

  • 2 years of training in conscious sexuality and Tantra
  • 4 years of training in eco-therapy
  • more than 30 years of studying cultural wisdom from all over the world

This means I’m comfortable with helping you address your own relationship with sensuality and sexuality, your spirituality, your cultural roots, nature and or the bigger ‘web of life’ if you would like to do so, as part of our work.

I have been practicing as a qualified therapist in mental health for 18 years, with clinical experience in the NHS from 1996, group facilitation since 1997 and case management since 1998.

I have had experience in providing effective leadership to multi-disciplinary teams, and supervision and mentoring to other therapists since 2002.

I successfully set up my own business in 2009, as a self-employed, private practitioner.
