My approach
Mindfulness-based core process psychotherapy (MBCPP) is a psycho-spiritual blend of Buddhist psychology, mindfulness practice and psychodynamic psychotherapy. As such, my work is underpinned by Buddhist principles of mindfulness, compassion and unconditional acceptance. I believe that at our core, we are all inherently healthy, whole and wise but it is easy to lose sight of this as we are overcome by life events and our conditioning.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy explores our early development and how we came to be in relationship with others. The relationship between therapist and client is crucial – as we are wounded by our early relationships, so healing can occur within the safety of a therapeutic relationship.
My approach is trauma-informed and creative and may involve working with the imaginal – whether that is images, dreams or role play, depending on the client. I pay attention to the body–mind relationship and often focus on awareness of the body in the present moment – this could be through the felt sense, breathing or even a bit of movement – as a way to get in touch with memories of life experiences that have been stored in our bodies long after our minds have forgotten them and begin the process of letting go.
MBCPP offers a contemplative approach to psychotherapy, an opportunity to slow down and focus on the here and now. As your therapist, I am able to offer you presence and awareness without judgement. I don’t believe I am an expert on you, but through a process of collaboration and joint enquiry with me in a safe space, you can take the time to get to know yourself on a much deeper level and gain an in-depth understanding of how you came to be the way you are now, what remains unresolved and what needs your attention.
You don’t need to be a Buddhist or have any experience of mindfulness or meditation to experience core process psychotherapy. It is enough to just be as you are.
Training, qualifications and experience
I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Mindfulness Based Core Process Psychotherapy from the Karuna Institute.
I am a senior trainee psychotherapist, in the final stages of accreditation with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
I worked for three years as a placement therapist at the Spiral Holistic Therapy Centre in Islington, north London. I also have experience as a volunteer call handler for Mindline. My background is in drama teaching and life coaching.
Originally from South Africa, I have a heightened awareness of the impact of oppression on people of a different race, culture, sexual identity or religion as well as the immigrant experience. As such, I am interested in questions around difference and belonging. I welcome people from the LGBTQ+ community as well as people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
