My approach
Bereavement is one of the most profound experiences we can face as it touches every aspect of our lives, our emotions, thinking, our relationships and our physical and mental health.
When reaching out for support after loss, it is often because we are in a deep state of emotional turmoil. We can feel angry, guilty, fearful of letting go, sad and bereft, even numb and blocked.
My approach is to support clients through their unique and complex grief journey, to create an empathetic and confidential space where their loss is validated, honoured, and respected.
Grief comes in many forms. I can help with:
- acute grief (immediate, intense with physical symptoms)
- anticipatory grief – dementia and life-limiting diagnoses
- bereavement by suicide
- bereavement by homicide
- collective grief (community, workplace or social group loss)
- complicated grief (prolonged and unresolved)
- compound grief (multiple bereavements)
- disenfranchised grief (loss not acknowledged socially, culturally or valued)
- inhibited grief (suppressed and not consciously processed but emotionally painful)
- living loss (grief of those still alive following a breakdown of a relationship, divorce)
- loss of a child
- loss of identity and regaining a sense of self
- miscarriage and perinatal bereavement
- post-traumatic growth (finding meaning and purpose, increased personal strength, compassion, appreciation and gratitude, or engaging with life following loss)
- secondary and future loss (loss of concrete things, financial security, relationships, hopes and plans following a significant loss and bereavement)
- sudden and traumatic bereavement
- uncomplicated grief (the natural, difficult emotions following loss)
In my counselling sessions, I aim to provide a calm, welcoming and non-judgemental space where clients feel safe to express their grief in their own way and time.
My collaborative approach encourages the client to guide the counselling process, while always respecting their personal journey and supporting them to reconnect with their inner resilience. I can provide a theoretical understanding of grief and the grieving process with practical skills to help the process.
Grief can be a deeply isolating experience; and often we don’t want to burden our family and friends, or they find it hard to know how to provide support. In our sessions, I aim to cultivate a connection that reminds you that you are not alone, where the unsaid can be said. I work to ensure that your experience is always met with empathy and understanding.
Grief is not about ‘moving on’ but rather about finding ways to move forward with self-compassion as you integrate the loss. Together, we can explore a path that respects your experience, supports your healing, and allows space for growth, even when enduring profound loss.
