My approach

As a psychodynamic therapist, I consider the relationship between therapist and client to be central to understanding and addressing problems. I hope that you would come to trust me as someone you can be open and honest with, to share your feelings and experiences in confidence – to be supported when you need it and challenged when you need that too.

Through collaborative thinking and conversations, we would seek to shed light on the things that are troubling you and come to understand what may underlie your difficulties. Some of the sources of your problems probably seem obvious to you, while other unconscious influences may be revealed through subtle clues and patterns that we discover together over time.

We would think about the issues you bring to therapy in the context of the complexities of your life. This could include your family, past and current circumstances and relationships, your desires and wishes for the future, your views and values.

Thinking through problems in therapy can help you to gain clarity and perspective, to cope with challenges, to have greater self-acceptance, and to develop the confidence to make desirable changes. Therapy is a tool for thoughtful reflection, to explore what is important and meaningful to you.

The first appointment is an initial consultation and assessment session. This is a chance to meet, to think about the issues you’re bringing to therapy and to see whether working together could be beneficial.

I work both short term and long term in person and online.

Training, qualifications and experience

I have been a counsellor and psychotherapist for over 20 years and in that time, I’ve worked with people at all stages of their adult lives: people of many ethnicities, and of cultural and social backgrounds.

I have worked with clients with a wide range of problems, drawn to therapy because they were unhappy, in difficult circumstances, or were going through life transitions. Clients have come because they were feeling stuck, lost, confused, or were experiencing painful, intractable emotions. Some have come not really knowing why but feeling that something about their lives was out of kilter.

I have many years’ experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist in universities, where I’ve also conducted therapy groups. I’ve supervised psychotherapy trainees and professional staff involved in the care of students, such as disability officers and welfare officers. I’ve provided reflective practice groups and trained others to run them too.

Prior to training as a psychotherapist, I had significant experience in management. I have an interest in the complexities of working environments and the emotional and psychological impacts of challenges at work.
